Spend any amount of time around young children and what will you hear? Questions. ‘What happens if I press this?’, ‘Where does that come from?’ and the much-repeated ‘Why?’ Although they might sometimes become quite wearing if you are the one who constantly has to answer them, it is through these questions, and the natural curiosity of children, that they learn.
Through a child’s eyes, everything is new and fresh and intriguing and, like little sponges, youngsters are hell-bent on soaking up every new scrap of information possible. Through an adult’s eyes, however, the world often becomes a somewhat lack-lustre place which no longer invites curiosity for its own sake.
As we grow older and experience more and more in life, our perceptions come to be more and more fixed. We think we know what happens when we press this, where that comes from and why, and so we stop asking. In addition, we establish our own routines and get used to doing things the same way, so once again we feel as though there are no surprises around the corner and that there is nothing left to learn.
In life in general, this is a rather sad place to reach, but in our careers it can be downright dangerous. It makes us stale and causes us to get stuck in a rut. It stunts our growth and development and it allows others to get ahead of us.
When you go to work tomorrow, try looking at things from the perspective of a newcomer. What are the things that you have come to take for granted without question? What are the things that you have never really understood but accepted at face value anyway? What would happen if you were to do something differently or ask why it is done in a certain way in the first place? Not only might you come up with some interesting answers that could help you add greater value to your company, but you might just open some doors and rejuvenate your working life into the bargain.
