Career Advice: Love in the Air

Of 966 people surveyed by Vault.com, fully 59 percent said they had dated a co-worker - with another 17 percent saying that they hadn't, but would like to!

According to Dennis Powers, the author of The Office Romance: Playing with Fire without Getting Burned, there are between 6 and 8 million office romances conducted in any given year - and companies aren't terribly happy about it.  Of 2,750 human resources professionals surveyed by the Society for Human Resources Management, 55 percent said their companies "permitted but discouraged" office romance - and 28 percent said that workplace love had brought accusations of "playing favorites" to the office.

At the same time, hardworking MBAs may be hard-pressed to find suitable partners outside the office.  If you're like the majority of people Vault.com surveyed, you may find yourself in a relationship with a co-worker at some point.

If this happens, your best avenue is full disclosure.  You should inform your supervisor of your relationship as soon as possible.  Some companies now ask employees to sign contacts that state that the relationship is consensual.
