Applied Technology, Master of Science in Education
Overview

The Master of Education in Applied Technology in Education is designed especially for teachers and trainers.  Students will be provided with a meaningful set of experiences to enable them to assess emerging trends and to implement informational technologies in an educational setting to enhance teaching and learning.  This set of skills will be increasingly needed in future educational initiatives.

The use of Information Systems and Technology in schools continues to increase steadily, as does the number of students, administrators and staff who are routinely exposed to computers and associated devices.  "Computers in the classroom" have become a populist issue and a prominent subject on many local, state and national agendas.  The increased presence of computers and related technologies has created educational opportunities unknown just a few years ago.

It is the express purpose of this program to meet the needs of educators by giving them all of the opportunities to become:

  • Competent practitioners, able in the use of technology and capable of assuming a leadership role in its implementation
  • Effective problem solvers, with the ability to integrate information systems and technology into curricula
  • Active learners attuned to emerging trends and technical innovation, with the attendant capabilities to appropriately position the proper trends/innovations within academe.

Certificate in Applied Technology

This certification program gives students a working foundation and knowledge of technology and the capability to integrate their learning into classroom or administrative activities.  Students who successfully complete these five graduate-level courses will receive a Certificate of Study in Technology and will be eligible to enroll and complete a Master's degree with a technology concentration.

These courses introduce teachers/trainers to new technology and how it can be used in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning.  Particular emphasis is placed on using new technology as a classroom tool.  This should appeal to teachers/trainers who are interested in adding a new source of inspiration and information to traditional teaching methodology and subjects that are not normally associated with technology, such as the humanities and languages.

Courses will cover new technology from the practitioner's point of view in areas such as:

  • computer basics

  • using the Internet as an information source designing Internet Web pages

  • presentation techniques

  • hardware/software selection & evaluation graphics/sound/image usage

  • teaching methodology
