System Administrator/JAS

Primary Purpose of Job:

This position will have two primary, and equally important, roles: Systems Administrator and Release Engineer. 

The Systems Administrator role includes managing desktops (i.e., Windows, Linux, and VMWare), servers (i.e., Solaris, Linux, SAN/NAS – fiber, SCSI and iSCSI, VMWare), and data networking (i.e., VPNs, IP Phones, Ethernet, comms lines, printers, security system).  The Release Engineer role includes managing builds and configurations, source-code control in Subversion (e.g., branching, merging), makefile maintenance, infrastructure automation, and tools evaluation & development.


Main Duties:

1. System Administration
• Setup and maintain desktop computing equipment including desktops or laptops with Windows, VMWare, or Linux.
• Setup and maintain server/lab equipment including Solaris, Linux, EMC Celerra NAS, fiber channel SAN, printers, …
• Setup and maintain data networking including Ethernet, Avaya IP phones, routers/switches, wireless, security, T1s, …
• Setup & maintain VMWare machines with images for all supported product OSs.
• Out of hours support for critical outages.
• Computing infrastructure procurement as requested.
• Perform daily back-ups.
• Active Directory administration.
• Document IT procedures & quick-start notes.
• Log & track help requests to resolution.

2. Release Engineer
• Unix & Windows shell scripting.
• Infrastructure automation via scripting and 3rd party tools.
• 3rd party tool evaluations, ordering, and installation.
• Knowledge of software development process and SCM best practices.
• Experience using build tools and utilities like make, nmake, ant, etc.
• Nightly product build & configuration management.
• Support svn and product use thereof in way of branching and merging.
• Ability to support makefile hierarchy and restructuring would be helpful.

Expected Standards:

• Must be a highly motivated, professional.
• Should display strong independent & team skills.
• Must be able to travel to Chicago if needed, although this will not be often.
• Aggressive and driven, focused on team and business success.

Experience/Knowledge Required:

Background and Experience
• Proven technical analysis and problem resolution skills.
• Experience working in an aggressive new product software development environment, preferably a start-up.
• Significant System Administration experience including Windows, Linux, Solaris, SAN, NAS, networking, VMWare, shell scripting, …
• Minimum 3 years with Windows, Office, Exchanges, SQL Server, and VMWare
• Minimum 7 years with Solaris, Linux, Unix
• Minimum 5 years with data networking
• Prior release engineering experience would be helpful.
• Server performance monitoring, and kernel tuning for high performance application would be helpful.

Required Skills
• Ability to demonstrate logical thinking and problem resolution research.
• Ability to demonstrate assertiveness and proactiveness.
• Excellent English language writing and editing skills.
• Proven ability, experience, & demonstrable knowledge to perform all the main duties listed above.

Education:
• Minimum undergraduate degree in Engineering, preferably Computer Science.
• Preferable would be a graduate degree in Computer Science.
