Veterinarian Req Number: 2494 Department: CRI Schedule: PRN-scheduled as needed Shift: Hours To Be Determined Hours: Job Details: Position Summary: Serves as the back-up veterinarian for an AAALAC accredited research facility. Directs or administers veterinary medical, diagnostic, surgical and clinical treatment procedures to various species, including rodents and swine when attending veterinarian is not available. Assists in providing consultative services to scientific and technical personnel pertaining to the selection and use of animals, development or evaluation of animal research protocols or production facilities, and in-depth evaluation of the relationships of animal disease to research programs. Shares emergency on-call duties with attending veterinarian. Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used. Work may require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols. Education and Training Required: DVM or VMD from a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA or satisfactory completion of the foreign equivalency examination (passing grade) given by the AVMA. Foreign educated candidates, who have completed part or all of their education outside of theUnited States, must have their foreign education evaluated by an approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in theUnited States.A license (or eligibility for licensure) to practice veterinary medicine in theUnited Statesis required. Experience Required: In addition to the educational requirement, a minimum of two years of relevant experience in the field of veterinary medicine. Completion of a residency program in laboratory animal medicine is preferred and may be substituted for equivalent experience. Must function independently in an animal facility and identify and evaluate animal health issues, provide clinical diagnoses, therapeutics and pre- and post-procedural care for research animals. Special Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Broad knowledge of laboratory animal health/medicine, and veterinary treatments and procedures. Knowledge of laboratory animal science planning, management and evaluation. Experience in handling mice, rats and swine in a research institution setting and technical skills in rodent surgical procedures. Excellent written and verbal skills. Interest in providing training.
