Principal Architect Tracking Code 101411 Job Description Position Overview The role of the Principal Architect will be to lead the architects in the Bb Learn vertical in crafting new solutions for customers and creating a path for evolving our products to meet key goals such as responsiveness, quality, flexibility, and innovation. The Principal Architect will report to the Chief Architect on the Engineering team in Blackboards Product Development group. They will work closely to develop a technical roadmap for our products and technology. The key partnerships across Bb for the person in this role are in: Product Strategy, Client Support, Managed Hosting, and Global Services. Key Responsibilities include: * Organizing to create shared knowledge of the business and our current products. Helping to scale the knowledge of the chief architect. * Understanding our customer and market drivers and guide product management and strategy groups into flexible, scalable, and timely solutions that engineering can implement efficiently. Developing a roadmap and plans that accomplish the business needs of customers. * Developing sustainable technical plans that may include architectural features such as multi-tenancy or educational resource management spanning distributed geographies and organizations" * Implementing effective security in the product. * Developing and sustaining plans for evolving the product architecture, focusing on ever increasing stability, testability, and extensibility." * Defining engineering and architecture best practices and ensure that the architecture team enforces them across all Bb Learn products. Required Experience The Competencies for success that Blackboard is looking for in this position are: * Demonstrated leadership of teams and ability to sell ideas to engineering, management, and customers. * In depth knowledge of software engineering (including modeling), current technology trends, technical standards activities. * Ability to operate within a highly technical environment and be able to successfully guide mission-critical projects * Familiarity with architectural structures, processes, etc and ability to elucidate clearly what makes a good architecture as opposed to a bad one. * Strong passion for technology and how it can be used to make improvements in business and society. * Experience working with standards organizations in defining, reviewing and implementing reference implementations of standards (both technical and functional). Additional Professional Qualifications * Bachelors degree required; Advanced degree preferred * 12+ years of professional experience ideally in a large software organization or an organization that has experienced continued, steady growth * Experience with overseeing the long-term evolution of a product line * Strong knowledge of our current and related technology base: including Apache, Struts, Web frameworks, Concurrency, and Relational database management systems. * Experience designing (within 1 year) and coding (with the last 3 years) architecturally significant web based products. Personal Characteristics * A person of high energy, and motivation; someone who can get excited about the business and instill that passion in those around him/her. Must be results-oriented. * Superb oral, written and presentation skills; high influencing and persuasion capabilities. High-impact, low-ego manner. Hands on, yet highly strategic.
