A considerable degree of responsibility, flexibility, and independence is required to carry out the diverse duties that are assigned. The ability to grasp the rationale for the methods used and careful attention to details of the protocols are important for success. The Research Assistant is able to read and understand the scientific literature, carry out experiments, assist with planning experiments, assist with analyzing data and make presentations to others about her/his work. A strong background in biology and chemistry as well as previous lab experience is required. Responsibilities: * Carry out animal protocols, including experimental treatments, surgical techniques, post-operative care, behavioral studies and euthanasia, in accordance with ACUC-approved protocols and the Guide for the Care and Use of Experimental Animals. * Carry out histological, immunohistochemical or in-situ hybridization experiments: prepare tissue sections and process according to experimental protocols. * Use methods such as immunoblotting for evaluation of protein expression or Northern blotting, RT-PCR and gene array technology to measure mRNA expression in tissue samples. * Carry out assays of lead content in blood and tissue samples, according to protocol. * Use computerized image analysis systems to collect data from the experiments; analyze data with Microsoft Excel and statistics packages such as SPSS. * Assist with the design and planning of experiments, using above/other methods. * Implement and troubleshoot new experimental protocols, based on methods described in scientific literature. * Work cooperatively with others in the laboratory to carry out collaborative research. Qualifications: EDUCATION: -BA/BS in neuroscience, biology, chemistry, molecular biology or a related science is required. -Course work in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology is required. EXPERIENCE: -Must have a minimum of one-year experience in laboratory research or equivalent training in an academic setting or closely related occupation. -Experience with molecular biology, histological and histochemical techniques is strongly preferred. -Previous laboratory training is required.
