DEPARTMENT - ESPN.COM SITE PROG & FEATURES TITLE - General Editor JOB ID - 210919 This fall, ESPN, the Worldwide Leader in Sports is launching an exciting new web venture dedicated to covering local digital sports. ESPN is looking for highly motivated individuals passionate about local sports and interested in joining our team. Scope of Responsibility Edit both original and wire copy for ESPN’s local sites. Write headlines, blurbs and link text to position the story for users. On a daily basis, assess content available from a variety of sources (includes copy from wire services, partners, ESPN staffers, freelancers, plus interactive elements, audio and video) to determine how it fits into our daily news coverage and programming needs. Work closely with ESPN.com news and copy desks to produce content that conforms to ESPN.com style and standards. Work with news editors and TV producers in Bristol headquarters to keep them fully abreast of all news on the local sites and to enhance local content with content (including multimedia) from Bristol. Participate in selecting art, including photos and video. Essential Functions Must have understanding and appreciation of news and story play. Must have excellent grasp of AP style, grammar, syntax and basic editing functions. Must be excellent headline writer and be able to present and tell stories in a tight space. Must show good judgment in prioritizing and selecting online content from a variety of sources. Must possess background or quickly become competent in HTML. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and work well with a variety of people in an office setting. Must possess excellent writing skills, ability to both write and edit copy in a short period of time. Qualifications Prefer a BS/BA degree in communication arts, journalism or new media or equivalent combination of education experience. Prefer 3-5 years experience in editorial assignments for traditional or new media. Experience in online media content preparation required. Must be able to edit, write and plan editorial content. Previous experience as a key decision-maker in a newsroom is a plus. Should have a basic appreciation of popular culture, e.g., “what’s cool” and contributes to an understanding of the tastes of ESPN’s viewers.
