DEPARTMENT - ESPN.COM SITE PROG & FEATURES TITLE – Senior Editor JOB ID - 210918 This fall, ESPN, the Worldwide Leader in Sports is launching an exciting new web venture dedicated to covering local digital sports. ESPN is looking for highly motivated individuals passionate about local sports and interested in joining our team. Scope of Responsibility Responsible for planning, editing and maintenance of ESPN.com local sites for multiple cities. On a daily basis, assess content available from a variety of sources (includes copy from wire services, partners, ESPN staffers, freelancers, plus interactive elements, audio and video) to determine how it fits into ESPN’s daily news coverage and programming needs for all its local efforts. Writes all front page copy and headlines. Selects all art, including photos and video. Works with writers in the field and edits live copy, working in conjunction with ESPN.com’s copy and news desks. Works with advertising department and promotional group to fill their spots on the home page. Work with ESPN television producers to produce local versions of SportsCenter. Essential Functions Must have solid understanding and appreciation of news and story play. Must be excellent headline writer and be able to present and tell stories in a tight space. Must show good judgment in prioritizing and selecting online content from a variety of sources for both local and national audiences. Must possess background or quickly become competent in HTML. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and work well with a variety of people in an office setting. Position may have people management responsibilities. Qualifications Prefer a BS/BA degree in communication arts, journalism or new media or equivalent combination of education experience. Prefer 5-8 years experience in editorial assignments for traditional or new media (with at least 2 years of people management experience if position will include people management responsibilities). Experience in online media content preparation required. Must be able to edit and plan editorial content for multiple sites during each shift. Previous experience as a key decision-maker in a newsroom is a plus. Should have a good appreciation of popular culture, e.g., “what’s cool” and contributes to an understanding of the tastes of ESPN’s viewers.
