Executive Editor - US History

Pearson Higher Education has a need for a Executive Editor in the Arts and Sciences Group to support the History list. The Executive Editor leads the activities of a product team within a defined market focus as assigned by the Publisher/Associate Publisher or as codetermined by the Publisher/Associate Publisher and the Executive Editor. A key aspect of this position is that the Executive Editor must also operate as an individual contributor on the product team as needed, either developing or acquiring product and oversee the management of individual projects.

The Executive Editors team is responsible for teams title-plan and individual title goals(using the most appropriate MCP imprint lines or brands) as well as the market share, gross margin dollars/percentage objectives. The Executive Editor provides guidance and management of his/her staff of development and acquisitions personnel, assisting the Publisher/Associate Publisher in providing vision to the brand management staff to drive effective positioning, pricing,and packaging, providing vision to channel marketing for promotional support, and providing motivation and support to the sales staff to drive effective distribution. Key Publishing Responsibilities: *Providing day-to-day management of team in order to meet publishing objectives. This management is not limited to financial and marketplace objectives but also includes the development and training of the staff in order to help grow the business. *Acquiring/developing titles as the needs of the team warrant *Assisting the Publisher/Associate Publisher in establishing publishing strategy for assigned topic area. Accountable for title selection, necessary market research, development and timely delivery of product that meets the needs of the marketplace. Title selection includes setting appropriate sales and financial goals for each individual title (working with staff and business manager to establish goals). *Overseeing the preparation of titles and making the actual title presentations at Editorial Board and implementing decisions made by Publisher/Associate Publisher *Establishing and maintaining a network of contacts within the marketplace itself. Example would include key product and marketing managers at software and hardware.

Publishing Skills -Firm understanding of the publishing process, especially acquisitions and development - Highly developed ability to perform either the acquisitions or the development function

Market Insight/Savvy -Technology competency -Understanding of End User/Customer and the marketplace -Understanding of the Computer/Technical Book channel 3 + years relevant experience with higher education editorial. A college degree or its equivalency is required. Experience in Higher Education sales. A working knowledge of the computer industry, editorial operations is highly desirable. Management and leadership skills or ability are also important to the success of this position.
