Senior Legislative Assistant

* Bachelors degree in psychology or related field (Masters degree preferred) * Two years of policy related work experience (e.g. government relations or congressional office) * Thorough knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory process * Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, written, and verbal), including public speaking * Ability to understand psychological research and present complex concepts to audiences with little scientific background

Description:

* Manages APAs legislative and regulatory activities related to public interest policy, including attention to issues impacting vulnerable populations; and other emerging health/mental health issues. * Develops and implements strategies for enhancing the utilization of psychological research by Congress and federal agencies to represent APA policy and advance public interest issues. * Researches and writes legislative proposals, congressional testimony, legislative summaries, APA briefing papers, grassroots e-mail notices, and newsletter articles, official comments to federal agencies on proposed regulatory action, and correspondence to key policymakers. * Initiates and maintains relationships with members of Congress and their staff and executive branch officials to provide psychologys input into research priorities and public service programs, and to monitor federal policies for their impact on public interest constituencies. * Establishes and maintains a network of contacts with other professional, consumer, scientific, provider, and government-related health, education, social service, and civil rights organizations and coalitions. * Establishes and maintains contact with APA members and governance groups with expertise and/or interest in public interest issues, utilizes their expertise in the development of APAs policy agenda and actions, and keeps them informed of APA public policy activities.
