Assistant Professor of Environmental Technology and...

Parsons The New School for Design, a division of The New School, seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor within the School of Constructed Environments (SCE). The Assistant Professor will hold teaching, research and service responsibilities including: - Apply expertise in environmental technology and materials science to help lead the SCE and the University with the teaching and research initiatives in sustainable design. - Apply the knowledge of natural systems, sustainable, and resilient design to detailing, embodied energy, emerging forms of alternative energy and water harvesting production and the integration of these technologies into constructed environments. - Provide intellectual leadership in the area and work collaboratively across disciplines and with other Divisions in the University, including all allied areas of the built environment, architecture, lighting, interior design and product design and for example, in environmental studies, international affairs, and urban studies.

Applicants should demonstrate expertise in the practice and theory of environmental technology, material science, and ecology while also being able to teach students from a variety of disciplines across Parsons. Candidates must be innovative in their pedagogical approaches to promoting students interest in the intersection between theory and practice. They should demonstrate ability to identify the skills and literacy that are now required to adeptly respond to 21st century global diversity in urban and environmental situations. The successful candidate will have a terminal degree in their field or equivalent professional standing/experience, will demonstrate a record of strength in teaching, research, and scholarship. An established record of professional accomplishments or publications is preferred.

The locus of this teaching position will be in the School of Constructed Environments, whose full and part time faculty are engaged academically while remaining active in their professional fields of practice. The School of Constructed Environments currently offers the following degrees and programs (*and is developing new graduate programs.): - Architectural Design (BFA), 87 students - Architecture (MArch), 84 students - Interior Design (BFA), 72 students - Interior Design (AAS), 120 students - Interior Design (MFA), 12 students - Lighting Design (MFA), 47 students - Product Design (BFA), 126 students

This position is dependent on budget approval from the Office of the Provost.

Teaching Responsibilities: The Assistant Professor is expected to teach both graduate and undergraduate students, hold regular office hours for students and colleagues, and participate in other classroom and extracurricular activities on a regular basis (e.g., critiques, juries, review panels, thesis supervision, independent study, internship supervision, program citizenship, Parsons/New School committees, etc.)

Creative Practice and Research: Faculty are expected to participate actively and with distinction in professional, creative or scholarly work.
