Research Assistant, Latin America Initiative

Supports Senior Fellow in the Latin America Initiative with research relating to issues of crime, poverty, energy, trade, migration, and growth, with a regional emphasis on Latin America. Helps obtain, manage, organize, and analyze large datasets.

Education/Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree (Masters degree preferred) in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or Social Sciences with 1-2 years experience in research and quantitative data analysis. Strong writing skills and fluency in English required; Spanish and/or Portuguese preferred. Work experience in and knowledge of Latin America a plus. Experience with statistical software such as SAS and STATA and other econometric packages required. Knowledge of Latin American-related information sources helpful. Competence to undertake research assignments with little or no supervision.

Knowledge Requirements

Knowledge of Latin American economic issues a plus. Ability to meet rapid, multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Professional demeanor and high level of comfort working with high-profile individuals from government/international sector. Ability to work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgment. Strong computer skills and experience required; experience handling large data sets and models preferred. Independent research experience preferred.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

95% Research Assistance: Conducts data analysis, utilizing econometric and other statistical tools, compiles and organizes large datasets, and presents the results of empirical analysis in table and graphical formats.

Conducts basic research on economic growth related issues, including carrying out bibliographical searches and summarizing research papers.

Writes summary reports; briefing memos; reports on forums, symposia, and conferences; compiles abstracts, summaries, and analyses of books and articles.

Monitors and summarizes current developments in relevant research areas, relying on effective internet searches, and provides substantive blog inputs.

Updates and checks existing data and footnotes; helps with editing and proofreading of publications.

Attends conferences and seminars as needed and prepares summaries.

5% General Assistance: Carries out substance-related logistics for policy roundtables and other events associated with project proposals.

Updates web pages in support of the scholars area of interest.

Other logistical duties as assigned.
