Application Engineer Leader

**Immediate Opportunity for Computational Scientist in Greenbelt, Maryland**

CSC seeks a computational scientist to fill a position at the NASA Center for Computational Sciences in Greenbelt, Maryland. This position requires a graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a relevant field (climatology preferred). The successful candidate must have HPC experience, scientific programming experience in a high level language (Fortran, C, or C++), UNIX experience, and scripting experience (UNIX shell plus Perl or Python preferred). The successful candidate will serve as a liaison from the NCCS to its earth science user community, assisting them with resolving any computing issues that prevent them from successfully obtaining their scientific results.

Essential Job Functions

* Works in conjunction with the business development staff to create new business by identifying customer purchasing requirements and providing technical support to potential/current customers in sales presentations and/or product demonstrations. * Creates demonstration-application(s) to present feasibility of the application to potential/current customers. * Defines and creates demonstration software and systems to showcase products and systems. * Provides answers to moderately complex customer inquiries concerning system software and applications, pre-sale and post-sale. * Tests user configurations for system compatibility. Coordinates the installation and maintenance of products/systems to ensure that the system is functioning according to specifications. * Interacts with engineering groups to assist in the design changes to equipment. Tracks the progress and quality of the projects with accountability to the customer, project manager and management to ensure on on-time and smooth product launch for the customer. * Trains and communicates with customers on systems applications and assists less experienced engineers as necessary. * Maintains relationships with assigned customers post integration; supports their needs and builds the relationship to encourage future growth of business with the customer. * Interacts with NCCS users on a regular basis to become familiar with their scientific research goals, their codes, and their current and future computational requirements. * Assists NCCS users in running their parallel modeling codes on high performance computing (HPC) systems, including assistance with data preparation, job submission, job monitoring,output analysis, and scripting. * Assists NCCS users in optimizing their parallel modeling codes for improved performance on HPC systems, including assistance involving both single- and multiple-processor optimization, selection of compilers and compiler options, and improved use of scientific libraries, MPI, OpenMP, and parallel I/O. * Assists NCCS users with strategic improvements of their codes, particularly in the design and implementation of better algoriothms and data structures, including, but not limited to, selection of appropriate linear solvers. * Evaluates and measures NCCS system performance and assists NCCS staff in identifying opportunities for improving the end-to-end NCCS user  experience, including, but not limited to, the areas of hardware and software configuration, configuration of queues, and storage. * Offers short tutorials on subjects of interest to NCCS users and staff members in the areas noted above.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

* Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience * Bachelors degree in computer science, engineering or related field preferred * Seven or more years of applications engineering, field support or technical sales experience * Experience working with overall business/account objectives and goals * Experience working with operating systems such as Windows, Linux, etc * Experience working with software tools including compilers, assemblers, debuggers and simulators * Experience working with assembly languages such as HTML programming, MySQL, C, C++, etc * Experience working with business areas such as Sales/Marketing, Business/Financial Analysis, Project Management

Other Qualifications

* Communication and presentation skills * Good interpersonal skills to establish/maintain customer relationships and interact with team members * Good organization and time management skills * Good analytical and problem solving skills * Ability to develop programs of a moderately complex level from concept to final within very strict time limitations * Ability to troubleshoot technical problems either on-site or remotely * Ability to comprehend, filter information, apply judgment and use experience in design/sale/support of products and systems * Ability to work productively across customer sites * Willingness to travel * Masters degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; Ph.D. preferred. * Degree field of study in a computational area, i.e., in climatology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or physics with computational emphasis, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Computational climatology is preferred, and applicants from other fields must have demonstrated relevant expertise. * Experience in writing and maintaining large parallel modeling codes written in Fortran, C, or C++ using scientific libraries, MPI, OpenMP, and parallel I/O.. * Experience in using various scripting languages (shells, awk, Perl, Python),  various tools (grep, make, sed), and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
