The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Safety and Security leads and directs the coordination, development, and management of the GW Safety and Security Program. The Program is an integral part of GWs operations at its campuses in the District of Columbia and Virginia, as well as at locations elsewhere in the U.S. and overseas where it conducts academic programs. At all times the AVP maintains a focus on GWs mission in the planning, administration, and execution of the Program. The AVP reports to the Senior Associate Vice President for Administration in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Treasurer (EVP&T). The role will have a broad level of interface with the leadership of the University, including the Universitys senior administrators. During emergency response, the AVP reports directly to the GW Leadership Group, comprised of the Universitys senior administrators. Bachelors degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant experience. Desired Qualifications: This position is critical to the University. The necessity for substantive depth and expertise is inherent to the position and a key expectation of GWs leadership. Moreover, this will be a visible role with a high level of accountability. Minimum basic requirements for consideration for this important role include: A cumulative total of 10 years experience, with greater length of service preferred; 7 years leadership experience in senior positions, having broad exposure and relevant certifications in one or more of the following fields: safety, security, crisis management, protective service, law enforcement, emergency medical services, emergency management, or related areas of service; Familiarity with the environment and culture of institutions of higher education; Demonstrated success with facilitating and coordinating partnerships among diverse groups; Previous success with leading teams and making decisions by fostering collaboration, gathering stakeholder input, and building consensus to include and persuade people who are not in a direct line of control; Comfortable working in a large and complex organization (including government, corporate, or academic entities) in which coordinating and cooperating with multiple peer-level departments or offices is necessary; Ability to maintaining effective and professional working relationships with supervisors, peer-level departments or offices, and subordinates; and Experience with strategic planning, program implementation, and success in meeting goals and budgets. Additional characteristics of the successful candidate include: Past successes with working collaboratively with DC government agencies; states, municipalities, and counties in the National Capital Region; and Washington-based federal agencies; Possesses established relationships at management and operational levels of federal and local government agencies as well as nongovernmental organizations relevant to safety and security functions. Proven ability to engage outside agencies, jurisdictions, community groups, and other public safety partners in collaborative planning and coordination around a culture of safety and security; Has successfully managed organizational change and led organizations through transitions; Written and oral communication skills, including preparing and leading discussions and presentations with varied audiences; Positive, motivational leader and mentor to staff and partners; Exercises good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in a high-stress and dynamic environment; and Willingness and ability to live in the Washington, DC metropolitan area with ready access to the University in the event of emergencies during the term of employment. Working Conditions: The incumbent performs job duties in a normal business office environment. Tasks are generally carried out in a sedentary format. This involves working while sitting at a desk for extended periods of time. Typically, the incumbent will not be exposed to adverse weather conditions, or physical activities to perform the job. Additionally, the incumbent may be required to attend meetings in other offices. The ability to operate basic office equipment such as personal computers, duplicating machines, fax machines and standard office telephones may also be required.
