The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Senior Synthetic Chemist. Responsibilities In consultation with others, assess needs for new materials in the area of chem/bio/physical sensing and taggant applications and develop synthetic strategies. Synthesize and characterize materials, measure key properties, and iterate approach to achieve desired materials. Provide technical advice on surface modification approaches and tethering chemical and biologically active species to various substrates. Document results, give presentations, and write journal articles. Qualifications Required: Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry with emphasis on synthesis. 5-10 years of hands-on experience with a variety of organic reactions, designing and troubleshooting multistage experiments, synthesizing bioactive compounds or precursors, and characterizing materials. Desired: Closely related degrees with comparable experience will be considered.Demonstrated problem-solving ability.Demonstrated publication record. Ability to work effectively as member of multidisciplinary team.Good written and oral communication skills.
