Senior Engineer

Position Summary This position will be responsible for performing a broad range of engineering and managerial tasks to support Instrumentation & Control (I&C) projects and support service assignments associated with fossil and hydro power plant systems and equipment. Knowledge of department programs, policies, and procedures, and working knowledge of applicable regulations and industry standards is required. This position will also provide technical guidance and assistance to other PPL employees and contractors in support of I&C group responsibilities. Assignments may include temporarily working at a plant, occasional overtime, shift work, overnight stays, and/or travel within or outside of Pennsylvania. The position level will be determined based on relevant qualifications and experience. Primary Responsibilities 1. Develop and implement projects to maintain or increase reliability of control systems and instrumentation equipment for all PPL fossil and hydro power plants. 2. Provide engineering and programming support for power plant Digital Control Systems (DCS). Prepare, maintain, and enhance design and maintenance documentation for DCS. 3. Provide support assistance to engineering work group and plant personnel. Work effectively in a team environment, both as a team member and, when needed, as a team leader. Interact with plant, vendor, and contractor personnel as required to perform or assist with assigned work. Work in a variety of support functions primarily in the home office with occasional plant visits and field assignments. Self-schedule assigned work activities to meet internal and regulatory deadlines as well as accommodate plant production schedules. When necessary, provide assistance with or oversight of commissioning and testing work on I&C system(s), e.g. CEMS, DCS, etc. at the plants. 4. Perform initial troubleshooting, documentation, and engagement of others as needed to resolve data and application software problems with DCS and/or other supported system applications. 5. Apply software client tools to obtain data from plant real-time historical databases as well as corporate and departmental relational databases for analysis purposes. Perform calculations, provide analysis, and develop reports, including trends, results, and recommendations that support work group assigned tasks, initiatives, and goals. 6. Use, and assist the work group with administration of, plant control and monitoring systems, e.g. DCS, CEM DAHS, plant data historians (PI or RTX), and other plant equipment monitoring systems. Maintain databases and assist with the development/enhancement of databases for work group supported plant equipment and systems 7. Support troubleshooting of system, equipment, process problems, or generation events and identify changes in procedures, design or equipment. Based on the findings, prepare reports along with recommendations to Operations, Maintenance and Management personnel. 8. Project responsibilities include from design conception, through installation and startup. This includes system and equipment specification and selection such as: I&C equipment and systems or other specialized equipment associated with power generation processes. 9. Project administrative responsibilities include: project plans, cost estimation, bid evaluation, vendor selection, contract administration and scheduling. 10. Assist and direct performance testing associated with the start-up, shut-down, and acceptance of I&C systems and multi-discipline projects. 11. Work with and/or under the direction of experienced engineer(s) in a variety I&C design and support areas associated with power plant operation and maintenance. 12. Work as a member of multi-discipline project engineering teams including plant personnel, contractors and vendors. Candidate Qualifications Candidates must meet the basic qualifications to receive consideration. Basic Qualifications 1. Bachelors Degree in an Engineering discipline such as Instrumentation & Control, Information Technology, Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering is required; Instrumentation and Control Systems experience is preferred. 2. Must be able to meet corporate requirements for respirator and stack elevator use. 3. Valid drivers license. Preferred Qualifications 1. Professional Engineer license preferred. 2. Experience relevant to Digital or Distributed Control Systems responsibilities is preferred. 3. Must successfully complete a Personal Risk Assesment and Corporate Level Training to meet NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection standard requirements. 4. The ability to define complex problems, collect information, evaluate data, draw valid conclusions, and develop solutions in a time-critical environment. 5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 9. The ability to work well in teams and possess personal skills in dealing with a wide range of individuals. 10. Strong communication, teamwork, and analytical skills. 11. Proficiency in PC systems and use of application software is essential, including MS Office applications (spreadsheet, word processing, databases, and presentation graphics). Experience with basic SQL programming, application/server system administration, and/or LAN administration is preferred. . 12. Engineers in this position will work under the direction of senior engineering personnel to develop the skills noted.
