The Environmental Specialist reporting to the Global Environmental Programs Manager provides leadership and support to manufacturing locations and the businesses for implementation of environmental programs, evaluating applicability of environmental regulations and resolving technical issues. The mission of Corporate EHS is to be a real-time, hands on resource providing service to Grace personnel around the world while balancing our governance obligations to the Corporation and the Board of Directors. We drive EHS excellence and deliver innovative policies, standards and programs to ensure the safety and health of our Grace colleagues, customers, the communities in which we operate and the environment in general. The Environmental Specialist will enhance Graces EHS programs by providing strategic and tactical functional expertise and support to Grace business locations and leadership teams. The position manages and continuously drives global excellence in core EHS management systems and processes and facilitates integration into Graces overall business operations for compliance assurance, productivity, and growth. Key responsibilities of the Environmental Specialist are: Provide leadership and direction to the business and staff roles while supporting implementation of the Grace EHS Policy and Global EHS Management System Assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive Environmental, Health and Safety Management Systems and processes Keep abreast of pending regulatory changes and advise business leadership accordingly Assists others in CEHS to support and sustain various EHS communication venues such as the Grace Global EHS Steering Committee and EHS Extended Staff Team with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Legal, Quality, Product Stewardship and others to ensure integration of EHS into Graces overall business processes Provide overall environmental program support to the businesses in collaboration with local EHS functionaries and operations leaders Assist in the integration and divestiture of businesses and manufacturing facilities Support regional and global environmental issues Support internal environmental recordkeeping and reporting Lead and/or support collection and reporting of environmental data (e.g., CAA, CWA, RCRA, EPCRA) as necessary Support responses to governmental agency requests for information on present and past environmental activities Partner with Grace site and functional leadership in the development and implementation of specific environmental activities and initiatives Facilitate regional and as appropriate global sharing of learnings and best practices between Grace sites Direct investigation of incidents and NOVs through root cause analysis, including developing and implementing corrective and preventive measures Support other Grace EHS regions and initiatives as necessary and appropriate DUTIES: Implement, maintain and monitor existing environmental programs, procedures, policies, and programs that: a) assure compliance with current, emerging and/or changing Federal, state and local environmental regulations (international and US) and b) support/align with Grace EHS Policies and EHS Management System. Provide hands on" support to assist site operations and/or EHS personnel comply with environmental regulations, policies, and programs. Maintain technical and regulatory environmental expertise within Grace. Advise the business on environmental compliance issues and risk. Maintain data necessary to complete internal and external reporting as assigned. Support the business in all aspects of business transactions (e.g. acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, etc). Lead due diligence activities when specified. Assist with the EHS integration of new acquisitions. Assist and/or lead in the investigation of environmental incidents to identify causes and recommend corrections. Others: - Support Management of Change in manufacturing locations - Support Corporate Compliance Audit Program, including assisting locations to close audit findings, assess appropriateness of corrective and preventive actions, etc. - Other duties as assigned Requirements Bachelors of Science degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Engineering or Chemistry Minimum of 4 years experience in environmental management in a manufacturing environment, preferably chemical or specialty chemical Demonstrated ability to lead by example, work with business management and technical professionals, team with diverse businesses, develop strong partnerships, communicate, influence and build consensus. Demonstrated success in leading/facilitating environmental process improvements and management systems. Experience in the planning, development, and implementation of EHS management systems and compliance programs. Education and experience must clearly indicate the existence of specialized knowledge and successful track record in the design, implementation, and monitoring of critical EHS programs including those associated with air emissions, auditing, emergency planning, incident investigation, pollution control, spill response, wastewater treatment, waste management and reporting, SPCC or equivalent, TRI or equivalent reporting, AST/UST (as applicable), and general process chemical management. Knowledge of International and US Federal, state, and local environmental and transportation laws, regulations, rules and standards. Ability to positively influence others in order to advance the best interests of Grace, internal EHS goals/targets, and EHS initiatives. Excellent organizational and cross functional integration skills. Self motivated; ability to make independent and informed, prioritized decisions. Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to work in both individual and team industrial work settings with minimum supervision. The ability to travel up to 25%.
