DEADLINE: November 10, 2009 This position is 40-hours per week with varied days off, either second and/or third shift. QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED. Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL Possession of a valid motor vehicle operators license. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening test and a battery of pre-employment tests designed to measure mental skills, motor skills, writing skills, physical fitness and agility applicable to the position. Must also pass a comprehensive background investigation including driving record, financial status and criminal history. RESPONSIBILITIES: Under limited supervision, serve as a uniformed member of the Department of Public Safety performing routine and diverse duties requiring independent judgment in the application of prescribed procedures and methods related to University services, traffic control and law enforcement duties; take corrective and/or enforcement action as required in accordance with established laws, regulations and procedures. Exercise tactful and assertive interpersonal communication skills. Patrol the campus to insure the security of facilities and the safety of students, staff, and visitors. Provide a visible presence. Prevent and deter crime by observation and confrontation of unusual circumstances or individuals. Lock or unlock buildings and notify supervisors of security defects, hazardous situations, suspicious persons, or criminal incidents. Perform crowd control, traffic direction and retail security duties as assigned. Enforce University of Delaware traffic rules and regulations. Assist law enforcement officers as directed. Perform backup when necessary. Diffuse potentially volatile situations, make apprehensions, and detain for police. Serve as supplemental uniformed employees at campus events. Perform messenger service for the University, transport confidential correspondence and potentially large sums of cash and/or checks and other sensitive material both on and off campus.
