General Description: The Compliance Specialist Trainer interacts between faculty and billing operations to provide expert guidance regarding potential revenue opportunities. The Specialist provides our first line of support and research relating to current and new sources of revenue opportunity. The Compliance Specialist Trainer constitutes the interactive voice between the Department of Medicines professional fee revenue cycle and School of Medicines Office of Billing Quality Assurance (OBQA). Responsibilities: * Evaluate coding proficiency of electronic charge capture systems. Providing ongoing technical support during and after implementation. * Create, review, and maintain departmental billing and clinical encounter forms (paper and electronic) through coordination with divisional representatives. * Implement annual CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding updates, to include updating paper and electronic charge capture forms and/or pick lists. * Collaborate with the Production Unit to provide monthly surveillance of billing area and location accuracy. * Develop departmental quarterly compliance activity report. * Maintain the updates of specialty specific TES rejection matrices. * Attend and participate in divisional faculty meetings to assure ongoing education of faculty and staff in billing, documentation, and compliance issues. * Provide ad-hoc revenue audits. * Attend all monthly meetings of the CPA Compliance Committee. * Serves on Department of Medicine Revenue Cycle Steering Committee as a resource for billing, coding, and compliance issues. * Participates on various School of Medicine committees as Department of Medicine Compliance liaison. * Provide oversight, train, and monitor staff that perform billing and coding services. * Maintains all departmental compliance policies and records. * Participates, plans and coordinates meeting of the Department of Medicine Intradepartmental Compliance Committee. * Develops the Department of Medicine Intradepartmental Compliance Plan and revises the plan annually or as appropriate in accordance with the CPA Compliance Plan. * Ensures appropriate training of housestaff, fellows, and non-physician practitioners. * Communicates any significant findings representing compliance risks to the CPA Office of Billing Quality Assurance. * Reviews monthly billing reports to identify billing and documentation trends and follow-up with various faculty, administrative and staff to correct inappropriate documentation trends. * Educates faculty and staff in the appropriate CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding of complex and multiple procedures that may require CPT modifiers and code modifications by payer. * Demonstrates initiative and proactive thinking. * Participates in professional development activities. * Maintains strictest confidentiality. * Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in Business Healthcare Administration, Nursing or other related discipline or  5 years of directly applicable experience required. A minimum of one coding certificate (CCS-P, CPC, RHIA, RHIT) is required.Must maintain certification throughout duration of employment.Knowledge of medical practice, anatomy, and medical terminology required. Must be proficient in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office software, to include, Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Must be self motivated and comfortable working both independently and as a team member. Demonstrated leader, communication, training, and organizational skills are essential. Must be proficient in grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure to effectively develop correspondence and prepare reports. Must become knowledgeable of internal organizational policies, procedures and systems. Superior written and oral communication skills required. Must have the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of existing work methods and develop and implement change as needed. NOTE: The successful candidate(s) for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background check.  The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, working with research subjects, or involving community contact generally require immunization against mumps, rubella, measles, chicken pox and hepatitis B. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office. Please be aware that should you require vaccination for chicken pox, the vaccine is administered in two doses given six weeks apart. Johns Hopkins University policy is that individuals will be placed off work without pay between the two doses.
