Introduction The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Undersea Vehicle Systems Engineer. Responsibilities Job Description - Apply expertise with Unmanned Undersea Vehicles and in system analysis and evaluation in a trusted agent role for the Navy's Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUV) programs. Support planning and execution of requirements analysis, system analysis, test and evaluation, and modeling and simulation in the National Security Technology Department for DoD customers. Duties - Work with multiple DoD system stakeholders to develop test and evaluation strategies and to evaluate high risk technologies and their effect on various aspects of Undersea Vehicle (UV) programs both manned and unmanned.  Develop evaluation strategies to address specific UV program concerns including vehicle dynamics, acoustic systems integration, communications, power distribution, mechanical integrity, and launch/ recovery. Support requirements development and requirements analysis for undersea systems. Requirements analysis would involve development of supporting mission descriptions and conduct of trade studies based on performance models and other tools. Work with DoD stakeholders to identify options and develop plans for program investments in test data planning, test instrumentation, system modeling, simulation, and integrated test and evaluation environments. Aid in the development or provide oversight for development of specific evaluation, analysis, or modeling solutions. Support Navy UUV R&D Program Management Office meetings at headquarters at the Washington Navy Yard. Qualifications Required - Minimum 5 years of experience in analysis and evaluation of unmanned or undersea systems or a field applicable to this position. BS in mechanical engineering, naval architecture, system engineering, or equivalent. Experience with systems engineering methods and tools for system analysis, performance modeling, trade studies, simulation, and test. Ability to lead or work as a member of team with minimum supervision. Excellent written, verbal and briefing skills. Some travel required. Must be eligible for DOD clearance requiring background investigation. Preference for current DOD clearance. Desired - MS in mechanical engineering, naval architecture, system engineering, or equivalent. Experience with design, development, and evaluation of unmanned undersea systems. Proven ability to lead/participate in engineering teams to provide value added, technically sound solutions to system integration and test problems. Demonstrated ability as a Project Manager. Ability to work within the government infrastructure and take on leadership roles in a diverse environment of contractors, Navy, government and user staff. Some NAVSEA acquisition practices preferred. Special Work Conditions Travel to include meetings (typically 4 days per month) at sponsor facility within 30 miles of JHU/APL. Additional regional or out of state travel may be required for stakeholder meetings and conferences (possibly 1 day per month). Security Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
