The Senior Veterinary /Study Technician in the Division of Comparative Medicine will coordinate technical support services to meet standards for research projects to meet FDA requirements including: a) design/revision of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and study related forms; b) coordination/oversight of procedures (preparation and conduct of procedures); c) data collection; d) study documentation; e) providing anesthesia support; f) performing animal observations and post-procedural care; g) equipment calibration. The position is also responsible for overseeing and performing billing of special services provided; b) overseeing purchase of veterinary equipment, equipment maintenance, and inventory of veterinary supplies; c) overseeing veterinary/research resource technical spaces; d) oversight of methods to maintain all written and computerized veterinary records and health notifications and responses. Coordination of training workshops for research investigator/personnel in rodent biomethodology and aseptic surgical techniques (hands-on procedural techniques) ? Two hour workshops; 24 workshops/year; 100 students per year. Biomethodology training includes: restraint and handling techniques, identification methods, anesthesia, blood collection, injections, gavage and euthanasia. Aseptic Surgical Techniques training includes: set-up of an aseptic surgical area, shaving techniques, aseptic prepping of skin, surgical attire/gloving by surgeon, draping of animal, opening of surgical packs, maintaining sterile field, re-sterilization of instruments, surgical incisions and suturing and stapling techniques. Provide veterinary observation for all species of laboratory animals including maintenance of written and computerized veterinary records and health report notifications/responses. Provide daily veterinary support procedures including restraint, medications, surgical prep, anesthesia support, and post-procedural care. Other daily veterinary support procedures, as assigned. A Bachelors degree in a biological science or related field. Four (4) years experience in a laboratory animal/research institution, working in a high level technical/ clinical capacity. Demonstrated skills and experience in large animal anesthesia support and post procedural care, and the ability to handle a wide variety of animals.
